The Lord’s Prayer: Daily Bread

Ruth 1:1-6 New King James Version

1 Now it came to pass, in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem, Judah, went to dwell in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech, the name of his wife was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion—Ephrathites of Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to the country of Moab and remained there. 3 Then Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons. 4 Now they took wives of the women of Moab: the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth. And they dwelt there about ten years. 5 Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died; so the woman survived her two sons and her husband.

6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law that she might return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the country of Moab that the Lord had visited His people by giving them bread.

The Summer of Prayer

Prayer Is Necessary In The Year Of OVERFLOW

In Every NEED, We Must Learn To SEEK The Lord In Prayer

Prayer Maintains Our Posture Of Thanksgiving and Praise

In Prayer We Are Given Heaven’s Perspective; Eyes To See What The Spirit Is Working In Our Lives.

What is Prayer?

Prayer is talking to God and listening for God to talk to us

  • “Talk” = thoughts and words exchanged with God in faith [Scripture, Dreams, Visions, Words, Thoughts]

  • A prayer life is developed and matures over time

Daily Prayer is essential to your spiritual health and growth

Jesus Taught His Disciples to Seek “Daily Bread” in Prayer

Matthew 6:9-11 New King James Version

9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.

What is Daily Bread?

Daily Bread is Our Invitation to OVERFLOW

Daily Bread Is the Portion of the Lord’s Prayer Where Jesus Invites Us to Turn Our Need Into a SEEK

  • In verse 9 Jesus teaches His disciples to focus their attention on who God is and where He is

  • In verse 10 Jesus teaches His disciples to recognize and desire His kingdom and will on earth

  • In verse 11 Jesus teaches His disciples to ask their holy Father to meet their NEEDS

Daily Bread is an Invitation for Heaven to Touch Earth

Genesis 20:7 New King James Version

7 Now therefore, restore the man’s wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”

Daily Bread is Available to Those Who SEEK the Father

Matthew 6:11 New King James Version

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

Give

  • God is our Father and Provider, it is His will to give good things to His children

Matthew 7:7-11 New King James Version

7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

  • Confident children SEEK for things to be given to them, not lent or sold to them

Give Us

  • Jesus is inviting us disciples to SEEK the Father together for the meeting of our NEEDS

    • This is an invitation for us to confess our NEEDS before one another

    • This is also an invitation to intercede for each another’s NEEDS and rejoice when they are met

  • Jesus is also inviting us to SEEK with Him, He cares for us, that is why He tells us to pray in His name!

    • Practical Advice || If you can’t imagine Jesus asking for it, you’re probably asking amiss [not right, inappropriate]

James 4:3 New King James Version

3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

Give Us Today

  • Jesus is inviting us into daily pursuit of the Father

  • SEEKING Him is relational, not transactional

Give Us Today Our

  • Our daily bread, NOT their daily bread

1 Corinthians 2:9 New King James Version

9 But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

  • We often miss out on deep and satisfying relationships with Father God because we compare our lives to the lives of those around us

Give Us Today Our Daily Bread

  • Daily Bread is Father God’s Practical Provision

Matthew 6:25-33 New King James Version

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

    • The OVERFLOW of Heaven’s Revelation [Knowledge of God]

Luke 24:30-32 New King James Version

30 Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. 32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”

  • The OVERFLOW of Heaven’s Abundant Life [Salvation]

John 6:48-51 New King James Version

48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”

  • The OVERFLOW of Heaven’s Victory [Over Death, Disease, and the Devil]

Matthew 15:22 & 24- 28 New King James Version

22 And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.”

24 But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” 26 But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” 27 And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
